Expert Advice - Choose the Perfect Tile

Join our very own Jim Aaron, VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, for some information on the three basic types of tile flooring: ceramic, porcelain, and stone.

Types of Tile

There are three main types of tile: ceramic, porcelain, and stone. Ceramic tile and porcelain tile are the most popular types. All porcelain tiles are ceramic, but not all ceramic is porcelain. For the most part, ceramic and porcelain are the same, but porcelain is denser than ceramic. It can resistant moisture, heat, and wear which makes it more durable. If you want high-end tile in your home, then consider investing in stone flooring. No two stone slabs are quarried from the same location, so each tile features its own unique mineral pattern.

Where Can Tile Be Installed?

Ceramic tile is the most popular and is perfect for kitchen and bathroom floors. If you want the same look but greater durability, then porcelain tile may be the better option. Porcelain is both water and heat resistant, making it a great option for an outdoor patio. Maybe you want something more natural to add to your home, stone tiles are a great option. It may be more expensive, but offers a look of its own as well as adds value to your home.

Tiles are not meant for just flooring, tiles are practical and functional in other settings as well. Wall tile is a great compliment to walls in kitchens and bathrooms, and can even be used as a statement piece or focal point in a room. Wall tiles are much smaller than floor tiles and not as durable. They come in a wide selection of shapes and colors and can come in preset patterns or you can create your own! Wall tiles also look great on shower walls.
